Lands End to John O'Groats

Introduction

In 1966 P.M. Swindon & W.J. Withers set the record for riding between Lands End & John 'Groates on a tandem. They completed the distance in 2 days, 2 hrs, 14 minutes 25 seconds.

In the Spring of 2011 Dominic Irvine & Ian Mayhew will be attempting to beat that record. Prior to October 2009 neither Dom or Ian had ridden a tandem.

Riding a tandem has been likened to rowing a boat - getting the timing right between team members is probably extremely rewarding and effective but difficult to sustain at racing speeds. On the other hand 'catching a crab' on a tandem while riding is very easy!

So between now and the Spring of 2011 Dom & Ian will be training hard, both to achieve an appropriate level of fitness & also to achieve the level of co- ordination on the bike required to allow a credible challenge to this historic record. You can follow the trials & tribulations of their training by visiting this page & reading their blogs.
